About WEN-DO
WEN-DO began in the late '60's-Early '70's after something happened to Kitty Genovese. She was a Woman who lived in New York City. One day, as she was walking home, she was assaulted. She fought her attacker and got away. He came back and assaulted her again. Three times she fought her attacker and got away. Eventually, she made it into the lobby of her apartment building, where she died of her injuries.
This made the news, and was seen by the Paige Family of Toronto. They thought that maybe, just maybe, if she had known a little bit of Self-Defence, she could have gotten out of the situation with her life.
The Paige Family were all Black Belts in various different Martial Arts. Deciding to combine their knowledge, they created a system of self-defence to be taught by women to women of any age and physical ability level.

When they offered their first course, over 1500 women signed up! They taught 200 in that first class, and then 200 more. Eventually, WEN-DO spread out from Toronto, across Canada, the United States, and there are even some places in Europe that offer it.

WEN-DO is taught in Winnipeg by Jennifer Thorsteinsson. Jennifer began her WEN DO training in 2000. She began her teaching apprenticeship in 2003 and has been teaching as a full instructor since September 2006
